GOOD-OARS

Summer School 2025

4 - 11 November 2025
Penang, Malaysia

Welcome to the

GOOD-OARS Summer School 2025!

The latest reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and from across the community of ocean scientists highlight the harmful impacts of rising ocean acidity and decreasing oxygen levels on both coastal and open ocean ecosystems. The reports make clear the urgent need to improve our ability to predict ocean conditions and to mitigate or adapt to harmful effects on ocean life.

The GOOD-OARS International Summer School 2025 aims to equip the next generation of ocean scientists with the multidisciplinary research skills to enhance our understanding of how marine ecosystems will respond over the coming decades and support efforts to address harmful impacts on the ocean.

The Global Ocean Oxygen Decade (GOOD) and the Ocean Acidification Research for Sustainability (OARS) programmes are endorsed under the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030) and led by the Global Ocean Oxygen Network (GO2NE) and the Global Ocean Acidification Observing Network (GOA-ON) of IOC-UNESCO.

Objectives

The Summer School aims to teach the skills and knowledge of the many disciplines needed to understand the ocean and atmospheric processes involved in ocean deoxygenation and acidification with a focus on tropical marine systems. It will engage graduate, doctoral students, and early-career scientists to recent developments and methodologies in the study of biogeochemical and physical feedbacks between the ocean and atmosphere in a changing environment, and how these affect marine ecosystems

Participants

The GOOD-OARS Summer School is open to graduate and doctoral students, and early career scientists interested in interacting with world leading experts in the field in a friendly setting, and enhancing their understanding of the processes constraining the future state of the oceans and environmental risks to marine habitats and ecosystems.
